This debut album from Seattle singer-songwriter Scott Katz beautifully captures the irreverent wit and warmth of his songs. Katz’s understated vocals, somewhat reminiscent of John Prine, are the perfect delivery vehicle for well-crafted, insightful and humorous lyrics. This album is a lot of fun, and from the hilarious “The Wrong Song” to the lovely “Carolina Eyes”, there is a breadth rarely heard on first offerings and a wealth of good ideas that really stick with you. The emphasis is on humor (“Love and Lunch”, “Beer is Good”, “Kenny G”), and the lean, tasteful production by Sam Masich and tongue-firmly-in-cheek performance by Katz makes it work. The album features flawless supporting vocals by Katie Peterson and Christine Duncan, and mandolinist John Reischman and Canadian harmonica virtuoso Keith Bennett also make outstanding contributions. Peterson’s lead vocal on the wry “Write Me a Letter” (so I can throw it away) is not to be missed. The live tracks are well recorded and capture Katz’s rapport with an audience that is clearly having a good time. This is excellent writing on a great debut album, and a must for any songwriter collection. Lyric sheet included - Victory Music Review
